An HKU spokesperson responds to the media:
“We require all students who have recently returned from the Mainland to undergo self-isolation for 14 days, same as all other citizens in Hong Kong returning from the Mainland, in accordance with the guidelines stipulated by the CHP and advice from medical experts. Since some halls have difficulties in providing enough single rooms with toilet facilities necessary for self-isolation, some students have been allocated temporary accommodation in hotels.
We wish to reiterate that self-isolation is a precautionary measure. Students being arranged for self-isolation have undergone health screening. They need to fill in a health questionnaire and have their body temperature measured to ensure they are in good health condition. They are people who are well, and definitely not “patients”. They have minimal risk of infection according to expert medical advice. All students currently under self-isolation in hotels have not visited Hubei or Wuhan recently. As of February 3, for all those who are under self-isolation, there are no cases of students having fever which require medical treatment in hospital. We closely monitor the students’ health condition daily, including taking their body temperature on a daily basis to ensure they have no fever symptoms, nor any symptoms of respiratory illness or pneumonia etc.
On a separate note, as of January 26, all the six suspected cases on campus reported to the CHP have been cleared of the novel coronavirus infection. There have been no new suspected cases since then.”
