The opening ceremony of the 120th ANNIVERSARY HAKING MADE - Hong Kong Entrepreneur: Haking Wong Exhibition was grandly inaugurated at The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Libraries on January 7th. The ceremony was attended by distinguished guests who delivered congratulatory speeches, including Professor Yang Wang, Vice-President & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Institutional Advancement) at HKU; Ms Shuxian He, Standing Committee Member of the CPC Xinhui District Committee; and Mr Herbert Wong, representative of Dr Haking Wong’s family.
As a renowned industrialist and philanthropist in Hong Kong, Dr Wong dedicated his life to promoting industrial development and education. In 1983, he personally funded the establishment of the “Haking Wong Building” for the Department of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong, becoming one of the earliest buildings named after donors at HKU. The building officially opened on October 6th of the same year.
Professor Yang Wang expressed special gratitude for Dr Wong's long-term support of HKU, especially for funding the construction of the Haking Wong Building, which provided vital facilities and a foundation for the development of the Faculty of Engineering.
The curator and Dr Wong’s grandson, Andrew Wong (representing the Haking Wong’s family), stated: “This exhibition is not only a tribute to Dr Haking Wong but also aims to raise social awareness about Hong Kong's industrial development and to showcase how local brands shine on the world stage.”
This exhibition reviews the legendary life of Hong Kong’s industrial pioneer Dr Haking Wong, from the "Toothbrush King" to the "Father of Optics." His entrepreneurial spirit of “overcoming competition” not only witnessed the post-war industrial transformation of Hong Kong but also exemplified the resilience and innovation of Hong Kong entrepreneurs who give back to society. For the first time, over 40 classic Halina cameras, some of which are private collections, are displayed, along with valuable documents and historical records, comprehensively showcasing Dr Haking Wong’s outstanding achievements in optics and camera industries, and reviving the glorious history of Hong Kong’s golden industrial era.
